The FDA told a federal court its mifepristone safety review will not wrap up until March 2027, so mail-order abortion pills keep flowing under the current rules for at least five more months. Plus 128 members of Congress asked HHS to investigate Planned Parenthood, and the Murder Amendment (HB 1957) is still parked in the Senate.

The FDA finally told a federal court how long its review of the abortion pill is going to take, and the answer is longer than a lot of us hoped.

The abortion pill review won’t wrap up until March 2027

Late Wednesday night, in Louisiana’s lawsuit over the FDA’s rules for mifepristone, the agency filed a status report saying it expects results from its safety study by mid-December and its report “not later than March 2027.” It’s also reviewing the drug’s safety rules, including petitions asking to bring back in-person dispensing, and only after all of that will it decide whether changes are needed. The case stays paused in the meantime, so mail-order abortion pills keep flowing under the current rules for at least five more months.

128 members of Congress want Planned Parenthood investigated

Sen. James Lankford and Rep. Chris Smith led 128 members of Congress in a letter, released Monday, asking HHS’s inspector general to investigate Planned Parenthood’s federal funding, check for fraud, and weigh suspending or excluding it. Four Pennsylvanians signed: Reps. Mike Kelly, Glenn “GT” Thompson, John Joyce and Scott Perry. Thank you to all four.

The Murder Amendment is still parked in the Senate

HB 1957, the so-called “Reproductive Rights Amendment” that we call the Murder Amendment, passed the House 102 to 101 last December and has sat in the Senate State Government Committee ever since. The Senate returns October 19th, and it’s been the firewall keeping this amendment off the ballot. According to reporting, half the Senate’s seats are up in November, and a net change of three seats would flip control of the chamber.

Also on our radar
There was no new action in the taxpayer-funded abortion appeal at the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. The Commonwealth’s brief is due October 30th, and taxpayers are paying for abortions while the appeal runs. And according to reports, a House working-group memo urges passing the Women’s Health Protection Act and ending the Hyde Amendment in the first 100 hours if control of the House changes hands.

Right to Life Pennsylvania will be watching the Senate when it returns, and the FDA long before March.
